Becoming a living donor
There are so many benefits of a live donor kidney transplant. These include better long-term outcomes for patients and less likelihood of rejection.
There are four routes for living organ donation:
-
- Direct donation to a known individual
- Directed altruistic donation to a specific individual with no pre-existing relationship
- Non-direct altruistic donation to a complete stranger
- Paired/pooled donation where donor and recipient are incompatible so join a sharing scheme that matches other registered pairs of donors and recipients to increase compatibility for transplants.
This book written by Dela Idowu about her journey of coming forward as a potential living donor for her brother will help you on your journey if you decide to become a donor and transform someone’s life.
More Than A Match
Is an informative personal guide on coming forward as a living kidney donor for a loved one, friend or someone you don’t know who has kidney failure and needs a life-saving transplant.
The book narrates the personal and emotional journey of a family who unite together to transform the life of a family who needs a kidney transplant.
My sister who has kidney failure has been on dialysis for seven years. I was too afraid to donate a kidney to her, but after reading how Dela’s daughters who are in the 20’s offered to become donors for their uncle, I realised I had no excuse. Thank you for such a remarkable story.

I knew little about organ donation; however, I knew that it was something black people did not partake in. After reading More Than a Match my attitude towards it has changed.
